Sapphires - All the Colors of the Rainbow

One of the gemstones taking center stage in the upcoming Revelry Collection is the sapphire – but not only the classic blue sapphire we all know and love. The sapphires I have hand-selected feature a stunning abundance of hues.

How many sapphire colors are there? While the name is derived from the Greek word “sapheiros" (meaning blue), sapphires also occur naturally in shades of pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, gray, brown and even black. (Side note – a red sapphire is actually a ruby!)

The colors of these “fancy” sapphires are determined by the trace elements present while the stone is forming. The traditional blue color occurs when iron and titanium are present – the more iron, the darker the blue. With just iron, the stone may become green or yellow. If there is chromium present though, it causes the stone to become pink or red (ruby!) And if chromium and iron are present it causes the stone to become one of my very favorite colors – orange! See, isn’t chemistry fun?

Sapphires are from the corundum family of minerals, the next hardest to diamond. This means that its beauty is only matched by its incredible strength and resilience. Sapphire are perfect for daily jewelry wear, not just for formal occasions or engagement rings.

In designing this celebratory spring collection, I wanted to experiment with the combination of varied and vibrant hues. Along with tourmaline and garnet (both stones that I will talk about in future posts), sapphires create a stunning rainbow of options with which to play with. The possibilities are truly endless!
