Stone Crush – Peruvian Blue Opal

If you are longing for the colors of the Caribbean sea, then the rare Peruvian blue opal is the stone for you.

Peruvian Blue Opal Swell EarringsThe colors of this stone can vary from a light celadon green to neon blue and can range from opaque to translucent. My particular favorite is the dendritic variety that shows bits of dark inclusions that look like ferns formed from the copper found in the earth near where this stone is mined.

Peruvian blue opal only comes from (you guessed it!) Peru - specifically in San Patricio, west of the Andes Mountains and is the national stone of Peru. It was discovered during a copper mining exploration in the 1990's. Because of the high price of copper today, many mining companies have abandoned opal mining in favor of copper, making Peruvian blue opal increasingly hard to find.

Peruvian blue opal does not have the play of color or the “fire” of a traditional Australian opal but that is why I love it so much. Its beauty is in the electric blue color created from the oxidation of copper and with the more translucent stones, the subtle shades of sky blue and sea green. Each stone is unique and has its own story to tell.

This Morwenna ring with an almost translucent blue opal allows the texture of the silver backplate to show through.

Opal is the birthstone for October and folklore tells us that it provides many healing properties such as:

  • Relaxing the mind
  • Soothing fatigue
  • Strengthening the eyes and heart
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Aiding in creativity

I only source natural Peruvian blue opals that have had no treatment or enhancement. As a result, these stones need special care. Keep them away from extreme temperatures and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. It is also important to avoid chemicals or heavy perfumes when wearing as this can alter the colors of the stone.

I currently use this stone exclusively in my Calm & Chaos pieces. If there is a particular style within the collection that you would like to have made using this rare, beautiful stone, please contact me to learn what I currently have available.
